Houston Grand Opera’s World Premiere Performance at the Houston Public Library “On This Muddy Water”: Voices from the Houston Ship Channel

Houston Grand Opera’s World Premiere Performance at the Houston Public Library “On This Muddy Water”: Voices from the Houston Ship Channel

The Houston Grand Opera presents its world premiere performance of “On This Muddy Water”: Voices from the Houston Ship Channel on Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at 5:30 PM followed by a reception at the Houston Public Library’s (HPL) Julia Ideson Building, Tudor Gallery, 550 McKinney, 77002, 832-393-1662. The performance is an original song cycle offering compelling insights into the people at the heart of one of Houston’s most vibrant centers of industry.  The music was created by D. J. Sparr with lyrics by Janine Joseph, and featuring Lauren Pastorek, mezzo-soprano, and Heath Martin, baritone. The text is based on interviews collected through the Working the Port Project conducted by the Folklife and Traditional Arts Program of the Houston Arts Alliance. This performance was commissioned by the Houston Grand Opera for the centennial celebration of the Houston Ship Channel. The concert and reception are free and open to the public. Guests will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis.

There will be more opportunities to see the Houston Grand Opera’s performance “On This Muddy Water”: Voices from the Houston Ship Channel free at HPL’s Julia Ideson Building, Tudor Gallery on the following dates:

Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at 5:30 PM

Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at 5:30 PM

Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at 5:30 PM

Community Partners include: the Port of Houston Authority, Houston Arts Alliance (HAA) and the Houston Public Library.

About the Exhibit: “Stories of a Workforce: Celebrating the Centennial of the Houston Ship Channel”

Now through Saturday, January 31, 2015 at the Julia Ideson Building, Tudor Gallery | 550 McKinney St., 77002

This exhibit is presented by Houston Arts Alliance’s Folklife and Traditional Art program and Houston Public Library.

This exhibition explores the diverse culture, heritage, and lore of workers associated with the Port of Houston and the Houston Ship Channel.  In addition to dramatic photo, audio, and video installations, the exhibit features maps, signage, memorabilia and banners, painted portscapes, ship models, work gear, logs, and objects that enhance and illustrate the story of this unique and diverse work place. Another important component of the exhibition is its dynamic character, including:  touch screens to identify types of marine vehicles, their movement and activities in the channel, time-lapse photography that “pilots” the 52 miles of the ship channel day and night.

Public programs including lectures, demonstrations, workshops, symposia and storytelling sessions are scheduled for weekends and evenings to ensure full public participation.
