Census: Houston grew by 145K since 2000

Houston’s population grew 7.5 percent between 2000 and 2010, according to figures released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The Census puts Houston’s count at nearly 2.1 million, followed by San Antonio at 1.3 million, Dallas at nearly 1.2 million, Austin at 790,390; and Fort Worth at 741,206.

Fort Worth’s population grew the most over the 10-year period — 38.6 percent.

Harris County remains the largest county by population at nearly 4.1 million, a 20.3 percent growth since 2000.

Travis County, where Austin is located, had the most growth at 26.1 percent, though it is the smallest of the big-cities counties, with 1 million residents.

Texas’ Hispanic population grew by 4 million people, or 20.6 percent. between 2000 and 2010
