Africa Cup of Nations: Ghana, Cameroun Cruise, Ivory Coast Crash

Africa Cup of Nations: Ghana, Cameroun Cruise, Ivory Coast Crash

The Black Stars of Ghana won their first home match in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers by beating Guinea 3-1 at the Tamale Sports Stadium yesterday. The Black Stars have now opened a two-point lead ahead of next month’s double final qualifiers against Uganda and Togo.

Asamoah Gyan, once again, was the first to score when he connected home from close range after partner Jordan Ayew had set him up.

Elsewhere, Cameroun took a step closer to qualifying for AFCON 2015 finals after beating Sierra Leone by 2-0 at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaounde yesterday.

First half goals by Leonard Kweuke and captain Stephane Mbia saw the Indomitable Lions going to halftime enjoying possession and the lead.

The two sides played to a goalless draw at the same venue on Saturday but this time around Cameroun made full use of their home ground advantage.

The Indomitable Lions top Group D with 10 points and are guarantee a place in Morocco aftere Ivory Coast lost 3-4 to DR Congo in Abidjan.

At the Stade De Kutgue Stadium in Lome yesterday, Serge Akakpo netted the lone goal to give hosts Togo a 1-0 win over Uganda.

The defender broke the deadlock midway through the second half and it proved to be the decisive goal as the Sparrow Hawks registered their second straight win of the campaign.

The goal came in the 70th minute after defender Isaac Isinde had committed a foul; the resultant free kick was nodded in by Akakpo, who gave advancing Ugandan goalkeeper Dennis Onyango no chance with a slight brush to the ball.

The victory temporarily handed Togo the top spot of Group E with six points before the changes following Ghana’s 3-1 victory over Guinea in Tamale.

But the story was not a palatable one for the Elephants of Ivory Coast who were humbled in front of their fans 4-3 by Congo DR.
