[AUSTIN] - The Department of Health and Human Services released numbers today for the Affordable Care Act enrollment period of October 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014. Numbers for the state of Texas show that 733,757 Texans applied for and selected a health insurance plan through the federal market place.
Texas ranked third nationally in health insurance plans selected behind California (1.4 million) and Florida (983,775).
"Today's number show that even in a state like Texas, where our leadership refuses to expand Medicaid, intimidates navigators, and continues to block access to health care options, people want to pay into a health care system and receive coverage," said Katie Naranjo, State Director for Protect Your Care. "Not only do the numbers show Texans want coverage, but that the Texans who have selected plans are young (30% of enrollees are 18 - 34), Latino (33.6% of enrollees identified as Latino), and qualify for financial assistance (84% of enrollees qualified for financial assistance)."
